Divas?

Here is this weeks CP cover. Do you know these two? Well, they are Gamble and Huff, the founders of Philly soul, the TSOP sound. Apparently they did not have time to have a photo taken, so I was tapped in to do "something".

After a few tests (above) including a vector idea, I decided on a simple marker rendering to finish the job. Once all were happy, the above cover was birthed. There. Done.

Goin' Crackers.

For your approval, another installment in me "Monday Madness" illutrations. This time sans knife wound. The top piece is another in a long line of "abandoned housing" pieces. This time, the story concerns houses that are bought with hidden pre-existing lawsuits and payments.

The bottom piece is about the Philly Superintendent of Schools, Arlene Ackerman. She's trying to blow smoke up peoples asses. She's a caterpillar.

What?! Non-Work Stuff!

Here are a few new/old new personal pieces. They fit together, like a running narrative. I'll save that explanation for when the rest are done. All were done with my usual mix: acrylic, pencil, ink, crayon, colored pencil, accidental blood. You are excused.

Quickie!

Here is a thing I did for our Science Issue. It wasn't exactly used, but I still like it. I still like you, abandoned child. Whatever.

ELECTRIFIED!

We recently ran a story on the book of the history of the Electric Factory. For those of you who don't know what the electric factory is, know it is a place where people see bands play the music we all stole earlier that day online. Anyways. The photo was taken by old Neal Santos, who has previously made appearances on this site for similar projects

Since the focus of the book was 60's-70's era music business, I wanted the cover to have a bit of a black light poster vibe (if i may be so bold to say). Ultimately, much of the original idea was watered down, but still had some style to it. So there. A few of the other versions are shown below the cover.

IT'S A CRAB!

I present now my piece for the Autumn Society TMNT art show "Shell Shock". There is a metric ton of really great art going into this show, and I was a bit intimidated, frankly. After quite a bit of mulling around, I got to this grotesquery from a simple sketch (that you can see below).

Yeah...this one.

I had thought of doing a more heroic piece of somewhat realistic turtle warriors, but all for naught. This is the only sketch I did for that ole chestnut. I simply cannot pass up an opportunity to make something ugly.

Blips on the Screen

I present some* recent work. That is all. I don't know. How are you? Anyways... the above illustration is based on a story about a secret division in the Philly PD called "the Happy Cops" (no joke). This elite team has been trained in etiquette, manners, and social graces in an effort to be seen as "nicer" by the public surrounding whatever area they patrol. Ok, I made up the training bits, but seriously, happy cops? Apparently Philly cops are really angry. Which I can totally agree on, based solely on the handful of times I have waved down a squad car thinking it was a cab.

* Been working on lots lately. This is just a taste of stuff I have done. Frankly, I haven't been completely into all these small illustrations, which is why I left a few out. To be even more honest, several weeks in a row, the illustrations were all on the same topic. Boooooooooooooooring.
